The BBC magazine programme Morning Live today featured an investigation into growing concerns that many popular supplements contain ultra-processed fillers and binders.
In an 8-minute segment on the prime-time show, presenter Justine Jones set out the explore the “hidden” UPFs in products often marketed as healthy.
After quizzing supplement users in the street on their knowledge about the ingredients contained in the products they take themselves, Jones next visited Viridian Nutrition to talk with company nutritionist Phil Beard about how consumers can gen up to distinguish between ‘clean’ formulations compared to supplements with additives. Beard told Jones that the “junk ingredients” used as binders, fillers and additives were “inactive ingredients and provide no health benefit whatsoever.”
Later on in the report another independent expert explained the potential impact of additives to the gut, including bloating and digestive discomfort symptoms. She said: “That’s why it’s really important to do your own research, read the labels and look for certification” and advised people to always check the ingredients in supplements.
The investigation concluded with comments from the broadcaster and public health expert Xand van Tulleken. He said: “There are tens of thousands of supplements on the market in UK at the moment, and it is impossible to deliver a verdict on all of them, they’re so different. My advice would be to go for a trusted high street brand, who will be making a decent quality product.”
Earlier this year Viridian launched its own ‘No Junk’ campaign to highlight the impacts of a “junk filled diet and additive laden supplements” and drive consumers into specialist health retailers.
Phil Beard said: “Since starting our No Junk campaign and working to highlight what to look for in a clean formulation supplement, we are delighted to be chosen as the featured company in this educational TV segment.
“We believe the public’s concerns over ultra processed ingredients in our everyday foods is justified. However, the fact that so many additives can be found in other supplements is sadly often overlooked. Supplements are often made up of fillers, binders, anti-caking agents, glazing agents, emulsifiers, preservatives, flavours, sweeteners and other additives – the list goes on! These have no health benefits and research has shown they can have detrimental effects.”
