Leading French organic retailer Biocoop (765 stores nationwide) has announced discounts on 400 everyday products in what it says is an unprecedented price drop. Significantly, the initiative – launched this week – will not be temporary, but a “sustainable promotional operation, and real gesture in favour of eating better and consuming better for all.”
The retailer is emphatic that these lower prices come with the same high values that it sets across the business.
Biocoop, operated as a cooperative, says it is in a position to make the price cuts because of continuing strong market performance. It produced record turnover of EUR 1.65 billion in 2024, with retail sales values and volumes up by +8.5% and +7% respectively. “To achieve this reduction, we have cut back on our margins,” general manager Franck Poncet, told French media.
Of the 400 discounted products, around 100 are Biocoop own label lines. For the other discounted products the retailer says it has worked with suppliers to achieve equitable results for all. Price decreases range between -7% and -17%. To demonstrate the impact, Biocoop created a representative basket of 16 items where the current total cost would be EUR 41.25 – but where with the discounts applied, it drops to EUR 38.44.
For two months the discounted lines will be marked as ‘Price Down’. They will then join 160 other “committed prices” lines that already positioned at around 10% lower than average prices in the specialist channel. The new price discount initiative is part of Biocoop’s commitment to “making organic farming accessible to as man as possible” and drive to provide a more affordable point of entry to organic for French consumers.
