With just under three and a half years to go before the EU’s 25%-organic-by-2030 deadline arrives, new data gathered by Eurostat and shared this week by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) reveals which countries are currently closest to that 25% target.
The EU’s 25% organic farming by 2030 target – which refers to organic farming’s share of total farmland – was first announced in May 2020 , as part of the European Commission’s Farm to Fork Strategy under the European Green Deal.
The newly updated data shows that Estonia (22.58%), Portugal 21.23% and Italy (19.49%) occupy the top three positions for organic farmland share, with Sweden (16.6%) and the Czech Republic (15.96%) making up the remaining top five slots.
The EESC has published the latest data as part of its commitment to highlighting the role of sustainable food systems in building a greener, fairer and more resilient Europe.
Through its work, the Committee has consistently called for:
• supporting farmers during the transition to more sustainable production methods
• strengthening local and regional food supply chains
• protecting biodiversity and natural resources
- making sustainable food accessible and affordable to everyone
Data captured in the 2026 edition of the World of Organic Agriculture (jointly complied by FiBL and IFOAM Organics International) shows that (as of 2024) 18.1 million hectares of EU farmland is under organic systems, around 12% of total farmland. Spain (2.9 million ha), France (2.7 million ha) and Italy 2.51 million are the top three countries in terms of total organic farmland, while Denmark, Sweden and Germany top the rankings of EU countries for the metric of organic share of total food sales nationally.
