Health Stores Ireland urges UK industry colleagues to ‘climb on board’ Save Our Supplements campaign

Health Stores Ireland is urging UK industry colleagues to get behind its ‘Save Our Supplements’ campaign.

The initiative was launched earlier this year amid industry warnings that proposed harmonisation of maximum permitted levels (MPLs) of vitamins and minerals across the European Union could result in sharp reductions in allowable supplement dosages.

The campaign highlights concerns that currently proposed MPLs could result in significant potency reductions across a range of widely used nutrients, including Vitamin D, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and Magnesium. Industry representatives contend that the precautionary risk model underpinning the EU’s approach was developed in the context of hazardous chemical regulation and is not appropriate when applied to nutrients with established safety profiles at currently available potencies.

A petition calling for the preservation of access to safe, effective supplements has gathered over 28,000 signatures, but Health Stores Ireland is aiming to get that figure to 50,000 to maximise its influence on law-makers and health agencies.

“These levels will undoubtedly affect the UK, as well as all 27 countries in the EU. Please join us by signing and sharing the petition widely”

Health Stores Ireland President, Erica Murray appealed to industry colleges in the UK this week “to climb on board and join us in protesting the anticipated imposition of restrictive MPLs being considered by the European Commission. These levels will undoubtedly affect the UK, as well as all 27 countries in the EU. Please join us by signing and sharing the petition widely.”
